Deaf Alcoholics Anonymous Group in Frederick, MD
New Deaf Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Group:
Many Deaf people find it difficult, if not impossible, to find an accessible Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group they can attend for support and encouragement when dealing with alcohol issues. Even if a mostly hearing group provides an interpreter for meetings, the varying quality and consistency of interpreted meetings can be discouraging. Good news for Frederick, Maryland folks who are looking for an AA group – a new group is forming this month. See more information below. For those of you who live in other cities and states, please send in your local Deaf AA group information in the comments section. We’d love to know where other Deaf, and even interpreted, AA groups are being held.

Had to find this post in DeafRead Extra. No worries, mine was posted there too, scoffs. Recently, I had to reach out to several people to get a list of ASL interpreted AA/NA meetings. Success! Here’s my updated list for Northern California. BTW, I attended a NA meeting last Sunday to observe for my class assignment. An interpreter was indeed present which was good.

Congratulate for set Deaf AA Group up. Signs of Life Program of the deaf in San Diego, CA. The program is outpatient. Every tuesday evening Deaf Big Book ( A.A.) video Study Group is at SOL . They are welcome hearing alcoholics, we provide the interpretr for hearing. It is success to share each other and keep running the group by itself. The professional as counselor should not paricipate the group because we fellow the tradition of A.A. AA pay the interpreter fee. San Diego have eight 12 step meeting
( A.A. / N.A. group) with interpreters every week..
Congratulate again. SMILE

Thank you, ASC– for posting this.
I would like to emphasize that the AA meeting in Frederick is limited to those who seriously think they may have a problem with alcohol/drugs and to those who are members of AA. Anonymity is an important foundation of the AA tradition. As we all know, Deaf community is a very tight knit community- anonymity is a big issue for many deaf who want to get help, but worry about confidentaility.
*Note: Open discussion meetings are open to anyone who think they may have a problem or are members of AA. Closed discussion meetings are closed to AA members.
There are interpreted AA meetings in DC. Information below:
Tuesdays, Gay AA meeting (open discussion) 6:00-7:00 pm at the Triangle Club 2030 P Street NW (few blocks from Dupont Circle Metro) located between Lustre Cleaners/Cafe Japone restaurant
Wednesdays, AA meeting (open discussion) 8:30-9:30 pm at the Dupont Circle Club, 1623 Connecuticut Ave NW (one block from Dupont Circle Metro) located between Lamdba Bookstore and Melody Records, 2nd floor.
Sundays, AA meeting (open discussion) 12:00-1:00 pm at the Dupont Circle Club (see above for the address)
Feel free to email me at Melt@sprint.blackberry.net if you have questions or would like a ride to the meetings.

drmzz – Thanks for sharing the Northern California AA/NA meeting information. It’s good to know which cities/states provide access for Deaf people.
Art Mac Whinnie – Glad to know more about the Signs of Life program in San Diego. Just to clarify, ASC didn’t set up the AA meeting in Frederick – we are just passing along the information shared with us by CSD.
Melinni T. – Very helpful information about the open/closed meetings. Thanks for explaining and also for passing on the DC AA meeting information. You are right about confidentiality concerns often being a big issue in the Deaf community. Hopefully, people will realize there is so much more to be gained from seeking support and encouragement than from staying at home and letting confidentiality fears get in the way of a happier life.

Yes, one of the commenters is correct about your blog is on DeafRead Extra. I’m puzzled with that and I guess I am only one person to vote it so far.
Anyway there’s report card from NAMI graded in America is D overall from this website link: http://www.nami.org/gtsTemplate09.cfm?Section=Grading_the_States_2009
Wow, sad to see some states have:
1. Consumer & Family Empowerment: graded report card D (Includes measures such as consumer and family access to essential information from the state, promotion of consumer-run programs, and family and peer education and support.)
2. Community Integration and Social Inclusion:graded report card D (Includes activities that require collaboration among state mental health agencies and other state agencies and systems.)
Hope that DeafRead will understand how important this blog needs to expose for the better health community. Thanks for letting us know.

ASLforLife,
Thank you for sharing the interesting link with us. It is sad that only a few states received a B grade and none an A. I can imagine it is even worse for Deaf services. The link is more about the general hearing services!
We appreciate your constant support of ASC’s vlogs/blogs.

Hi,
I did not know about this vlogpost until I went to my OLD account
and saw an announcement of your vblogpost. Because I rarely use
my old account, please use my present account, jeanbout@verizon.net.
I, too, did not see the mention of your vlog on DeafRead until I read above. I must agree with Shawn that DeafRead should have explained.
It is good to hear about AA group in Frederick.

UPDATE on this old posting- note the new email address, Melinni@gmail.com. Also note that the Frederick AA meetings are no longer in existence. Wednesday nights AA meeting is now from 6-7 pm, not 8:30-9:30 pm. There is a new meeting at the Triangle club on Thursday nights from 6-7 pm. All other information in this post remain the same. Thank you, ASC– for posting this.
