Hi Everyone,

As a cornerstone of emotional well-being, sleep is sometimes underrated in our society. How many of us have stayed up until midnight to catch the end of a movie or finish a project, only to find ourselves waking up in a fog the next morning, unable to stay alert without downing an alarming succession of caffeinated beverages?

Research shows that most of us function best on an average of 8 hours of sleep per night. If you are habitually getting by on less sleep than that, chances are you are putting your well-being in danger. Lack of sleep has been shown to be associated not only with greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, but also with impulsivity, attention difficulties, inadequate learning, anxiety, and depression. In addition, impatience and irritability resulting from insufficient sleep can create relationship conflicts.

This month, read about the meaning behind recurrent dreams and learn how sleep affects your sex life. For parents who wonder how many hours of sleep elementary-age children really need each night, check out the article below. You just might be surprised!

By the way, the world record for intentionally going without sleep is around 11 days – definitely not something to try at home! Sleep well.

All our best,

Candace and Sharon

A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow. — Charlotte Brontë

To Live This Thought: Calm your mind and body before going to sleep. Soak in a hot bath. Sit for a period of meditation. Read something pleasant before bedtime; save the Stephen King novel for earlier in the day.

    African American Baby

Every living creature needs to sleep. It is the primary activity of the brain during early development. Circadian rhythms, or the sleep-wake cycle, are regulated by light and dark and these rhythms take time to develop, resulting in the irregular sleep schedules of newborns. The rhythms begin to develop at about six weeks, and by three to six months most infants have a regular sleep-wake cycle.

In the beginning of a relationship, coming to work sleepy often means that your sex life is going well. But surveys, experts and common sense suggest that people who are chronically sleep-deprived actually have less sex.

    Recurring Dreams
    dream

Most dreams contain messages that serve to teach us something about ourselves. Unfortunately many times we forget what we dream about as we go about our daily routine. With recurring dreams, the message may be so important and/or powerful that it just will not go away. The frequent repetition of such dreams forces you to pay attention and confront the dream. The dream is trying desperately to tell you something. Such dreams are often nightmarish or frightening in their content, which also helps you to take notice and pay attention to them.
