Hi Everyone,
Addiction. The first thought that comes to mind
when you see this word is probably drugs or
alcohol. While these certainly rank among the most
common examples of addiction, there are other forms
of addiction that can prove just as devastating. See
our article on pager addiction among Deaf people to
find out how pager use can go overboard and cause
problems in your relationships.
This month, ASC interviews Steve Shevlin, one of the
few Deaf addictions counselors in the US. As Steve
notes, getting on the road to recovery requires much
more than simply breaking bad habits.
To mark National Alcohol Screening Day, ASC will be
conducting free, confidential screenings on Thursday
April 6th at CSD of Maryland, 452 Prospect Blvd.,
Frederick. Stop by between 9 am-12 pm or 5 pm-8
pm to get the facts about alcohol's effects on
health. We'd love to see you!
All our best.

In any family, measles are less contagious than bad
habits.
— Mignon McLaughlin
To Live This Thought: Be mindful of your behaviors
and their impact on others, especially children, who
model their own behaviors after yours. Make a plan
for eliminating or altering any
bad habits that you may have fallen into.

Where can Deaf people go if they are having alcohol
or drug related problems? For most, it’s not a simple
matter of just showing up at the nightly AA meeting
downtown or walking into a clinic and asking for
counseling. Finding accessible and Deaf-friendly
addictions services can be a challenge. Steve
Shevlin, Deaf CEO of the New Jersey-based Signs of
Sobriety, offers us a glimpse into the world of Deaf
addictions and recovery and shares some
encouraging words.
