Hi Everyone,
Being psychotherapists, we obviously believe in the
healing powers of therapy. But we are also strong
advocates of other ways of dealing with life’s
complications, growing pains, and challenges. This
month we profile the potential therapeutic benefits of
blogging and watching movies, two activities that stir
our emotions, stimulate thinking, and encourage us to
see things from new perspectives.
Blogging is in many ways a modern form of self-help
group therapy. Posting and reading blogs allow us to
reach out and connect with others. We find
out we are not so alone in our innermost ponderings,
in our darkest secrets, or our nagging doubts. This is
healing and freeing – and a wonderful way to gain
courage to make changes in our lives.
Watching movies can trigger strong feelings as well.
How many times have you felt tears welling in your
eyes, rage simmering inside you, or laughter spilling
outward while viewing an especially moving scene?
Perhaps a certain character reminded you of your
best friend from college or a story felt like it came
right out of your own life, but made you look at it in a
different way. Like therapy, movies help us release
our feelings and analyze our lives.
We have lots more to share with you – and we’d love
to hear from you, too. Come join us at ASC on the
Couch(
www.ascdeaf.com/blog), our own new blog, up
and running this month. You can access the ASC
blog from the permanent link on the ASC website

All our best,

Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.
— William Wordsworth
To Live This Thought: The next time you feel
passionately about something, take the time to
express yourself by writing, making
a video clip, or even drawing a picture. Notice how it
feels to put your thoughts and feelings into tangible
form.

Can watching a film like Crash help you
discover your
own hidden prejudices? Does Brokeback
Mountain
make you think about your own issues of intimacy
and sexuality? And with all its emotion and
controversy, can a movie like Munich teach
you
anything about anger and revenge?

Venture into the blogosphere and you’ll find Deaf
people everywhere, signing video clips, writing text,
and reading on any number of topics. They’re hanging
out with Deaf and hearing buddies, debating the
recent Gallaudet protest, and sounding in with their
opinions on everything, from audism to deafhood to
education for Deaf children.
