Hi Everyone,
Welcome back to the ASC Newsletter! We are glad
to be in touch with you again, after our much-
needed August break.
As summer ends and another season begins, we are
reminded that our lives, too, are constantly
changing. This month we take a look at how to
make peace with one of the biggest changes all of us
face - the aging process.
Whether our own physical, mental, or emotional
transformations, or those of our parents or loved
ones, aging brings with it a powerful impact. As with
many things in life, aging has its gifts, as well as its
downsides. Understanding our feelings about growing
older – our hopes, fears, regrets, dreams, and so on –
can help us figure out what we need in order to
accept and embrace this inevitable change in our
lives.
In the Deaf community, we deal with unique
challenges when it comes to caring for our older
generation. It is especially important to find ways to
maintain connections with older Deaf adults and to
involve them in community events.
We hope these articles will inspire you to think about
your own beliefs and attitudes about aging, and
perhaps encourage you to take on a new perspective
about it.
All our best,
Candace and Sharon

we can lose sight of the gifts in aging. The next
time you find yourself bemoaning getting older, stop
and see if there is another, more positive way of
looking at the situation.

Embracing Aging |

While some cultures celebrate the wisdom and insight
that comes from getting on in years, in North
America, where youth reigns supreme, the thought of
growing old ‘gracefully’ has been replaced by a war
on aging. Whether it’s battling fine lines, sagging skin
or the fading memory of maturation, getting older is
something to be fought at every turn. But despite all
the medical and technological breakthroughs one fact
can’t be denied: we’re all getting older.
